BBC Interview on the Mekong River

Prof. Daniel Parsons was interviewed on the BBC Science in Action broadcast concerning a major @NERCscience funded project (http://www.stelar-s2s.org/), which is concerned with sediment transfers and erosion in the Mekong – a large tropical river in SE Asia – and specifically how climate and dam building will impact the river and the vast delta system where the river meets the East China sea. Dan highlighted how dam building will impact both flood peaks and sediment delivery to the delta, whilst also potentially effecting adversely a range of fish migration patterns to their spawning sites. Research is underway to attempt to design the dams in such a way to ensure the rivers long-term sustainability whilst also supplying the region with a lower carbon energy source into the future.
