Revolutionary instant vital signs monitor receives recognition at the IET Innovation Awards


An innovative handheld monitor that instantly reads a person’s vital signs has received recognition at the IET Innovation Awards 2014.

The invention, called Eimo, is a simple device for anyone to use, anywhere, to collect their own vital signs, including pulse, oxygen level, core body temperature, blood pressure and a full ECG trace.

The innovation was developed by Professor Ping Jiang, PhD student Robert Munnoch and Dr Yongqiang Cheng in the Department of Computer Science, in collaboration with iMonSys and Triteq.

Currently technology in use today to take someone’s vital signs uses several different monitors such as a blood pressure cuff, ECG, an oxygen sensor, and a thermometer.

In comparison to this, Eimo does what all of these instruments do, but everything is contained within the one small handheld unit.


The innovation was awarded Highly Commended in the Measurement in Action category.

Eimo is designed to quickly check, display and store a patient’s vital signs during a normal consultation with their GP and to help patients to remotely manage their own condition.

It is intuitive and ergonomically designed so that a user simply has to hold Eimo in one hand and insert two fingers of the other hand into the finger cavities. All the sensors are contained within this compact device which is smaller than a normal glasses case.

The readings from Eimo are sent directly to a computer or mobile device using bluetooth or a USB lead, to display, store, or analyse the data.

The team is now working on a big data system for managing data streams from distributed Eimos for personalised healthcare.
